A stamping die is a special precision tool that cuts and forms sheet metal into a desired shape or profile. The die's cutting and forming sections are made from special types of hardened steel called tool steel. Metal stamping dies also can contain cutting and forming sections made from carbide or various other hard, wear-resistant materials. Our stamping die manufacturing process is performed by experienced die makers and designers.
There are a number of different types of stamping dies. Tooling can be built from the simplest to the most complex. Our team utilizes different machines and programs to make sure the client receives high-quality stamping dies quickly and efficiently. The stamping die fabrication process begins with the use of computer software to plot out the process from start to finish. We have a well-equipped machining shop where we can fabricate dies in-house. The use of CNC machining, along with other processes such as EDM, prototyping, and tool & die building, assure the geometry and specifications of your product.
Line Dies can be used for lower volume parts that don’t require an automated tool or die. Line Dies can also be used to create large parts that aren’t practical to run from several dies in a single press. They typically are used when larger parts can’t be effectively manufactured with just one press. Line Dies can be loaded by hand or robotically. Parts can be run in tandem line presses, along with automation that can move the parts between presses.
Line Die Stamping advantages:
Smaller tools can be handled with lower-cost die handling equipment
Single station maintenance does not require removing all the dies
Lower costs than more complicated dies
Can be timed to run together in a common press
Ability for more complex geometry since parts can be rotated on any axis by the operator or robot if necessary
This type of metal stamping can include punching, bending and coining. These methods can be applied in tandem through an automatic feeding process that can create complex components. A number of individual work stations can be used, with each one performing certain operations on the part. Parts are carried between stations by the stock strip and are cut out of the strip on the final step. Progressive die stamping is well-suited to operations requiring production of many small pieces quickly, since multiple cutting and forming operations can be performed simultaneously.
Progressive Die Stamping can offer a number of key benefits:
Shorter set-up times
Decreased labor costs
Minimizing scrap
Faster production of small parts with tight tolerances
Long run lengths
Transfer die stamping is similar to progressive die stamping, but the part is transferred from station to station by a mechanical or robotic transport system. The transfer die can be a single die, or it can be a number of dies arranged to form a sequence of stations. The process begins with a strip of metal being fed into the first station. The blank for the component is cut from the strip, then transferred through the various forming stations until completed. All parts are transferred simultaneously to the next station. Transfer presses can create specific part features, such as chamfering, cut-outs, knurls, ribs, pieced holes and threading. This can eliminate the need and additional cost for secondary operations.
Examples of situations where Transfer Die Stamping can be used:
Frames and structural components
Tube applications
Large parts requiring transfer among several presses
Shells
